Zakat
What is Zakat?
Zakat is a fundamental pillar of Islam, referring to the obligatory charitable giving that all financially stable Muslims are required to undertake. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, alongside Shahada (faith), Salat (prayer), Sawm (fasting during Ramadan), and Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca).
Zakat is typically calculated as 2.5% of a Muslim’s wealth and assets that have been in their possession for a full lunar year. This includes savings, investments, gold, silver, and business profits that exceed the threshold known as Nisab. However, certain conditions and exceptions may apply based on individual circumstances and interpretations of Islamic law.
The primary purpose of Zakat is to redistribute wealth and assist those in need within the Muslim community, especially the poor, the needy, and those experiencing financial hardships. It serves as a means of social welfare, solidarity, and economic justice, promoting the well-being and cohesion of society as a whole.
